This amount will fund 101 new recreation and conservation projects throughout the State in upcoming years. The $120M investment in the WWRP matches last biennium’s support for new parks, playgrounds, trails, acquisitions and habitat restoration projects, and indicates continued strong bi-partisan support for recreation and conservation projects. “We are deeply grateful and appreciate the legislature’s deliberation and decision to emphasize consistent funding for our state’s parks, wildlife habitat, and working farms and forests” says Yvonne Kraus, Executive Director of the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Coalition (WWRC). WWRC’s Founding Board member Bill Chapman adds “This program budget represents a bright light in difficult times and speaks to committed leadership by Governor Ferguson and key legislators, as well as the strength of the program’s bi-partisan support.” Read more <http://smartmailerclick.bisglobal.net/act_linkClick.aspx?sm_guid=ODYyODI5fDc5MzUzNjg5fDF8amVmZmJvY2NAY28uamVmZmVyc29uLndhLnVzfD c5MzI0NjF8aHR0cHM6Ly93aWxkbGlmZXJlY3JlYXRpb24ub3JnL3N0YXRlLW1haW50YWlucy0xMjBtLWZvci13YXNoaW5ndG9uLXdpbGRsaWZlLWFuZC1yZWNyZWF0aW9uLXByb2dyYW0tZnVuZHMtMTAwLW5ldy1jYXBpdGFsLXByb2plY3RzL3wwfDB8MHwxMTYxf DB8MHx8ODU4MDU2fDE1> Give Big! Protect Big! Play Big! <https://media2.charityengine.net/WF/_transactionServerFiles/1161/EmailBlogBanner(2).png> GiveBIG has officially begun in Washington — and early giving is open now! With your support, we can continue protecting the natural places we all treasure. One incredible example of why your gift matters is the Merrill Lake project in southwest Washington, located on the ancestral lands of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, Klickitat, Cowlitz, Cayuse, Umatilla and Walla Walla people. Thanks to the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP), 1,847 acres of prime riparian and wildlife habitat around Merrill Lake are now permanently protected. This stunning landscape is home to native species, critical water resources, and offers the public rich opportunities to connect with the outdoors. <http://smartmailerclick.bisglobal.net/act_linkClick.aspx?sm_guid=ODYyODI5fDc5MzUzNjg5fDF8amVmZmJvY2NAY28uamVmZmVyc29uLndhLnVzfDc5MzI0NjJ8aHR0cHM6Ly92aW1lby5jb20vNDAwNzgyNDYyfDB8MHwwfDExNjF8MHwwfHw4N TgwNTZ8MQ2> <https://app-rsrc.getbee.io/public/resources/multiparser/video_block/video_ratio_16-9.gif> <https://app-rsrc.getbee.io/public/resources/components/widgetBar/video-content-icon-sets/light/type-01.p ng> This is the power of community-driven conservation and your support fuels it. Here’s the important part: The Washington Wildlife and Recreation Coalition doesn’t receive WWRP funding. We’re a small but mighty team of four staff members, working year-round to ensure the WWRP receives the state funding it needs to keep projects like Merrill Lake moving forward. When you give to the Coalition, you’re not just funding one project, you’re helping protect landscapes across Washington. This GiveBIG, we invite you to Give Big, Protect Big, and Play Big. Make your gift today to help ensure more places like Merrill Lake are protected for wildlife, for recreation, and for future generations. GiveBig Today! <http://smartmailerclick.bisglobal.net/act_linkClick.aspx?sm_guid=ODYyODI5fDc5MzUzNjg5fDF8amVmZmJvY2NAY28uamVmZmVyc29uLndhLnVzfDc5MzI0NjN8aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cud2FnaXZlcy5vcmcvZG9uYXRlL1dpbG RsaWZlUmVjfDB8MHwwfDExNjF8MHwwfHw4NTgwNTZ8MQ2> Still Time to RSVP! <https://media2.charityengine.net/WF/_transactionServerFiles/1161/ExperiencetheWWRC(BlogBanner)(1)_2025410181021430.png> 🎉 Walk, Learn & Brunch in Redmond! 🌱🥐 Join us on Saturday, May 17, for a fun and unique morning exploring Redmond's WWRP-funded parks and trails. The park is forested, minimally developed, with some social trails throughout. It follows the steep ravine of Salmon Creek and other tributaries, which flow into the Puget Sound. Though forested, the tree makeup is a majority of aging deciduous trees such as big leaf maple and alder, accompanied by many weeds such as English ivy and Himalayan blackberry. The City of Burien was awarded a $1 million WWRP Urban Wildlife Habitat Grant in 1990 to purchase 98 acres in the Salmon Creek greenbelt near Des Moines. The land helps protect wildlife habitat, preserve salmon spawning waters, buffer the area from development, and lay the groundwork for future passive recreation opportunities. The Department of Natural Resources recently used this grant to complete major upgrades at Teanaway Campground in the Teanaway Community Forest. The project improved loop roads, added new walk-in campsites, expanded parking, and installed six new ADA-compliant vault toilets. To protect cultural resources and sensitive riparian areas, the project design was adjusted to reducing campsite numbers, rerouting roads, and replacing a volleyball court with a disc golf course. Volunteers also helped install new equestrian facilities and interpretive signage highlighting the site's history. These renovations help enhance the visitor experience, protect natural and cultural resources, and ensure Teanaway Campground remains a welcoming destination for all.
