The week-long drive starts Sunday, May 11th and runs through Saturday, May 17th. Featuring all kinds of special, community-themed programming – not to mention live musical guests and in-person appearances throughout Port Townsend and beyond – this Spring’s fund drive will focus on how our community can unite to bring friendship, abundance, education and more to everyone, and how KPTZ is a major entertainment and educational resource for OUR community. May 2nd (12:15) Episode 67 We're in the town of Jiayuguan, and still fighting a bronchial infection we get every time we travel to China. The local hospitals turned out to be a farce, if not a nightmare, so we threw ourselves at the mercy of the local pharmacy. Jiayuguan began its place in Chinese history as early as the Han Dynasty as a checkpoint along the Gansu Corridor. May 6 (5:20) & May 9 (12:15) Episode 68 Now we’re actually just six kilometers west of Jiayuguan at the fort for which the city was named. “Guan” means “pass,” and the fort was built to guard the Jiayuguan Pass. Aside from the Great Wall, the fort is the most impressive piece of construction along the Silk Road. May 13 (5:20) Episode 69 We’ve been visiting the Jiayuguan fort and the Great Wall west of town. In honor of its connection to the Wall as a monument to human effort, Jiauguan has built a museum in the shape of the Great Wall itself. Inside, we viewed reconstructions of different sections. Among the stories conspicuously missing was that of the man who built the wall in the first place. In this episode, Chris and Siobhan visit the Far Reach Botanical Conservancy with founders Sue Milliken and Kelly Dodson, who possess a lifetime embodiment of plant knowledge and a long history of cultivating and conserving rare plants. On 6 acres in Port Townsend, the Conservancy acquires and conserves botanically significant wild and cultivated ornamental plants new to North America with special emphasis on those that are threatened or vulnerable to loss. Robert’s role is to help stop fires even before they start. Businesses are all governed by codes to make sure they are trained to handle emergencies such as fire. There are mandatory inspections annually or every two years. Of course, if there are complaints – such as complaints about cleanliness and potential fire hazards in a restaurant – inspections can happen at any time. There’s also a push to educate the general public about what they need to do to prevent and perhaps stop a small home fire. Robert’s key role is to teach. The lessons are wide-ranging – from teaching CPR to 8th Graders to how to administer Narcan, which can help reverse drug overdose, and how to stop major bleeding. May 13/18 — Maryanne interviews Bob Wheeler, the President of the Friends of Port Townsend Golf Park. The nonprofit group has only been in charge of the historic golfing grounds for a little more than a year. But there are big changes. The greens have been totally groomed and revamped. Now every day groups of young 20 or 30 somethings show up to play disc golf, which is a form of frisbee golf. Families picnic on the grounds and a new playground will be installed shortly - funds permitting. Miniature golf is in the works, as are outdoor movies. The revamped clubhouse or restaurant is opening soon. This is not your classic country club - it’s open to everyone. It’s also the cheapest golf course in the region, by far.
