Dear County Commissioners:
I read once again about the “survey” which was apparently made available to some about the proposed new swimming pool facility in Jefferson County. I don’t know who received this survey,
but we didn’t, nor do I know anyone who did. Coincidentally, we are opposed to building a new pool or health and wellness center or anything of the like. We have been opposed to this
from the first day the idea was dreamed up and then presented to the public. And we have said so, in writing, at every possible opportunity. Having a new swimming pool would be nice,
but to spend money on that in our current situation would be beyond irresponsible. To my thinking, it would be criminal. We have substantial debt already and we have hundreds of millions
of dollars in deferred (and desperately needed) infrastructure maintenance – the cost estimates for needed street maintenance and replacement of our OG water system piping alone total
roughly 300 million dollars and there are many, many other things on which we should be spending our money first.
In all of the public forums we have attended on this subject, it has appeared to us that the vast majority of the citizenry is strongly against spending money on a new pool, for the
exact reasons I noted above. And yet a politically powerful few keep this issue alive, ignoring public opinion. The latest attempt to ignore and overrule us is this survey, which
was clearly sent out to supporters and is now being passed off as representative of public opinion. If you are going to act on this issue in response to public opinion, then please,
please get a real one, a vote by ALL of the citizens of Jefferson County.
Thank you.
