They’re looking for where to invest back in their communities. That’s what SNAP <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd 4ce40eb&id=29100e480f&e=b80de0d97c> helped me build—a business that’s more than a business.” ANDREA’S STORY: ROOTED IN RESILIENCE, BLOOMING IN COMMUNITY When Andrea left the Marine Corps in 2013, she didn’t set out to open a flower shop. She just knew she didn’t want to work for someone else. “I wanted to explore college—I had earned that opportunity,” she said. She found herself in a greenhouse management course, something completely opposite from her military experience. But it stuck. “I gave it a go. And it grew into something I never expected.” Adorkable Flowers & Gifts—a name born from her high school nickname—started as a dream and became a healing place. First a business license in 2014. Then a brick-and-mortar storefront in 2016. Then a pandemic. And still, she kept going. “It’s an honor to honor people,” Andrea says. And that’s what she does with every bouquet. She sees the way people pause when they see a certain flower, the way scent brings back memories of mothers, grandfathers, and weddings. “Flowers carry memory. They center you in a moment of love.” Running a business, however, has carried its own challenges. When an accountant mishandled her books, Andrea was left navigating cleanup that made accessing a loan nearly impossible. That’s when a friend pointed her to SNAP Financial Access (SFA). What she found wasn’t just business coaching, it was a lifeline. Talia is the one who made that all happen, but she’ll tell you that it only became possible three and half years ago when she decided to call Solid Ground’ <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/ track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=21947674d6&e=b80de0d97c> s Broadview Shelter and Transitional Housing <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id= 739f2e0b1a&e=b80de0d97c> for domestic violence (DV) survivors. “This is somewhere where for the first time, I felt safe,” says Talia. “Somewhere where no one was going to hurt me, and I wasn’t going to have to fight. Where I could say, ‘I need advice. I need resources.’” Returning to a ‘sanctuary’ Every day, thousands of people in the U.S. make the courageous decision to leave a harmful relationship, often giving up a home, belongings, financial stability, and community to do so. Many survivors don’t know where to turn for support, which is why studies show that 22% to 57% of homelessness among women is the direct result of domestic violence.¹ Continue reading…. <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=c8b4fd6d3a&e=b80de0d97c> 22 North Fire Update Thank you to Our Community <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=d8f6695e73&e=b80de0d97c> <https://mcusercontent.com/acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb/images/05e10680-394a-2fb4-4538-54f33713d2a8.png> <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=529ceb259a&e=b80de0d97c> <https://mcusercontent.com/acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb/images/afbf56fb-9971-3f85-36e0-2fd0aea0686d.png> We are incredibly grateful to the city of Bellingham Fire Department, our dedicated staff, and the wonderful residents who came together so quickly to respond to the fire at 22 North on April 22. All our tenants were safely evacuated because of their swift and coordinated efforts, and no injuries have been reported. Thanks to fire sprinklers and extinguishers, the fire was put out efficiently, limiting the damage to several units. While the cause was most likely burning candles left unattended, we’re still waiting on the final report from the fire inspector. As we assess the full extent of the fire, smoke, and water damage, our top priority remains the well-being and safety of our residents. Everyone affected was offered accommodations with our hotel partners this week. We continue working with residents to ensure everyone has everything they need. At this time, all but two units are ready for folks to return; as we approach the weekend, staff is working to move tenants back into their homes. MSC’s food bank, currently housed at its Federal Way offices, will move to the new Redondo Heights Food Bank Market, located about four miles north on Pacific Highway. The transition comes as MSC faces significant financial pressures, including cuts in federal and state funding, declining food donations, and the lasting impacts of inflation. “Providing nutritious food for our neighbors is a vital resource that MSC continues to prioritize as one of our core services in our community,” said Kirsten York, CEO of MSC. “While reducing food bank staffing by 50% at the same time we are experiencing an increase in food bank clients is difficult, we are committed to providing food for our community and will always find a way to do so.” Continue reading…. <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=70f88fb467&e=b80de0d97c> Childcare Business Forum <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=c2bb1134af&e=b80de0d97c> <https://mcusercontent.com/acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb/images/ef70ecb7-eb10-3159-8871-45318e534eb7.png> <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=40954ccea9&e=b80de0d97c> <https://mcusercontent.com/acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb/images/fca8979b-48d9-38e7-2698-94d29bc2a129.jpg> You’re Invited! * Klickitat County Business Forum: Workforce Childcare Needs * Wednesday, May 7th, 8:30-11:30am * Lyle Activity Center, Lyle, Washington * Coffee & Breakfast Buffet provided! For Morgan Smith and Nick Porter, two passionate leaders in the Employment & Training (E&T) team, it’s a calling built on compassion, persistence, and partnership. Morgan Smith, Employment & Training Supervisor, works in Rural Resources’ Clarkston (Morgan’s hometown) and Pullman offices and has been with Rural Resources since 2006. What began as a fresh-out-of-college opportunity has turned into a lifelong career dedicated to helping others. From his early days in the Clarkston office to now leading efforts across multiple counties, Morgan’s love for the work—and the people it serves—has never faded. “I’ve always loved everything I’ve done with Rural Resources,” he says. “It’s been an awesome experience for everything in my life.” Nick Porter, Lead Employment Coordinator, works out of our Colville office and shares a similar passion. Starting his Rural Resources journey in 2016 through the AmeriCorps program, Nick has worn many hats—from remote volunteer to program leader to avid Curlew sports fan. “When I look at all the different programs, that’s what we’re here for—to help people overcome barriers and build better lives,” he says. “We have the mindset of: Who and how can we help today?” Continue reading…. <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=a1ed350183&e=b80de0d97c> <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=e76a93dcf0&e=b80de0d97c> <https://mcusercontent.com/acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb/images/9f2a109a-c619-8188-db26-6e95a808dbc4.jpg> Community Condition Dashboard: Examining Homelessness in Washington is now LIVE! Healthy School Meals for All policies ensure every child has access to the nutrition they need to learn and thrive,” said Crystal FitzSimons, interim president of FRAC. “Additional strategies, such as providing students with enough time to eat and implementing innovative breakfast models, will ensure the programs continue to grow to meet the need.” Continue reading…. <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=4c8fa7c845&e=b80de0d97c> DOGE cuts hit small farms in western Washington A successful program to help small farms meet the growing needs of food banks has now been eliminated. <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=bc138821ba&e=b80de0d97c> <https://mcusercontent.com/acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb/video_thumbnails_new/f17e23a13304e44c0bcb62e50b94da0f.png> It's a bitter harvest for Vince Caruso at his family farm in Snohomish. "Yeah, none of it really makes any sense," he said. Twenty-five-percent of the crops grown on Caruso Farm <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=eecdb27802&e=b80de0d97c> go to support the Local Food Purchase Assistance Program. The federal program pays small farms to sell healthy produce at wholesale prices to local food banks — helping farms stay afloat while feeding the ever growing ranks of the hungry in America. That program has now been eliminated under the Trump administration. A USDA spokesperson saying it "no longer effectuates the goals of the agency." Vince Caruso said the cuts no longer effectuate the goals of his small business. "We're going to have less employees and less hours paid," he said. The initiative started under the Biden administration during the pandemic when many restaurants were closed and not buying food from farms, while food banks were overrun with demand. The program was considered a "win-win." That food is now gone, while the need is only growing. Since 2018, two years before the pandemic, the number of people using food banks in Washington has increased from one in six to one in four. In Snohomish County alone, more than 164,000 pounds of food will no longer be distributed to those in need around Puget Sound, and local farmers are out $455,000 in revenue. This, as food banks like the one in the Snohomish County City of Sultan are now having to limit the amount of food distributed because of $5 million in previously announced cuts to emergency food assistance in Washington state by the Trump administration. Meantime, the line at the Everett's Volunteers of America Food <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=3f91fbb755&e=b80de0d97c> Bank stretches out the door. A new snapshot from the Alliance’s Homelessness Research Institute examines the potential impact of eliminating these critical programs. While the Alliance does not anticipate such dramatic cuts, the data is clear: any cuts to these important programs will result in people losing their current housing, placing them at risk of homelessness. Homelessness is traumatic, dangerous and costly: keeping people in their current housing situation is far more efficient (and far less expensive) than the cycle of shelter, emergency room visits, and service interactions that communities may experience when someone becomes homeless. Administered by HUD, these programs provide federal rental assistance to millions of households—and still, funding only reaches 1 in 4 households <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/clic k?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=d1652e5b0c&e=b80de0d97c> eligible for this assistance. While HUD is systemically underfunded, communities use the limited funds they do receive to target assistance to older adults, disabled people, and people who work hard yet make extremely low incomes. Any cuts will destabilize the individuals and families who receive this assistance and will hurt the communities they live in. Policymakers should take this risk seriously and provide the funding necessary to sustain existing programs <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/tra ck/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=80b5f5157c&e=b80de0d97c> and expand them to more people in need.
