In the Town of Winthrop alone, the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP) helped make dreams a reality: * The Winthrop Ice Rink was upgraded to extend the skating season, and its facilities were expanded to include restrooms, showers, locker rooms, a common viewing area, and storage — turning it into a year-round hub for recreation and community gathering. * The Susie Stephens Trail, including its iconic 380-foot cable-stayed bridge over the Methow River, was made possible thanks to WWRP funding — creating a safe, non-motorized route that connects neighborhoods to downtown Winthrop for locals and visitors alike. Across the valley: * Between 2003 and 2013, the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife received more than $25 million in WWRP funding to secure essential habitat and sustain the ecological diversity of the Methow watershed — making it one of WDFW’s most successful acquisition efforts to date. * Between 2006 and 2018, more than $8.7 million was invested in Pearrygin Lake State Park to expand and improve public lands, preserve scenic views, and create new trails and road access to this beloved recreation destination. This, year, our advocacy for the WWRP means that the Methow Valley will gain: * The long-awaited Kay Wagner Riverwalk trail in Winthrop * A new addition to Pearrygin State Park * Campground Improvements at the Methow Wildlife Area * Expansion of Mill Hill recreational and natural river access site in Twisp These projects have strengthened the heart of a rural community that thrives on connection and access to the outdoors, and have made the Methow Valley the natural, beautiful, and community focused outdoor recreation hub it is today.
