050825 - Why We Can’t Go It Alone
ALERT: BE CAUTIOUS This email originated outside the organization. Do not open attachments or click on links if you are not expecting them. The workload has outpaced our volunteer board! <https://olympicdiscoverytrail.us21.list-manage.com/track/click?u=862004159972503fe35fefc93&id=194420673e&e=d7954f414c> Dear Trail Supporter, In 2021, the Peninsula Trails Coalition’s (PTC) board of directors met to discuss the future of the organization and its work as the principal advocate for building and maintaining the Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT). It was clear in 2021 that our all-volunteer operating model was no longer sufficient to keep up with the growth of both the ODT and the growth of the PTC. Like the Olympic Discovery Trail, the PTC has grown over the years. Today, it is a complex nonprofit organization with over 10,000 volunteers, members, and supporters. Our workload has rapidly outgrown the capacity of our all-volunteer organization. Consider this: Our day-to-day workload includes things such as route scouting, analysis, and selection · facilitation of route acquisition · route design and construction support (often through assisting in grant preparation and match funding) · funding and construction of trail amenities such as signage, trailhead facilities, and bridges · and an extensive all-volunteer program of basic trail maintenance. On top of this, the PTC performs the full range of activities needed to support the ODT and our organization. These day-to-day activities include: volunteer recruitment, training, and management · extensive fundraising and grant writing · conducting and supporting trail-based events · operation of a comprehensive website, digital communication network, and database exceeding 10,000 individual records · maintenance of broad-ranging social media platforms · design and publication of ten different maps and brochures · and coordination with regional and national trail organizations. This, of course, is in addition to our ongoing advocacy efforts with 14 different jurisdictions, which include 2 federal agencies, 3 state agencies, 3 tribes, 2 counties, and 4 municipalities. With this workload, you can see why we put together a five-year strategic plan in 2021 to, among other things, build the PTC’s organizational capacity and hire a professional staff. We recognized that while an all-volunteer workforce has taken us a long way, it is no longer sufficient to run the organization for the next 35 years. Our challenge today is simple to state: The PTC needs to build its financial capabilities sufficient to hire staff to assume a significant share of the large and increasing workload that has been shouldered entirely by volunteers. That’s why I am calling on you today to support the PTC’s spring fundraising campaign with a contribution of $50, $100, $500, or whatever you can afford. Donate to the campaign here. <https://olympicdiscoverytrail.us21.list-manage.com/track/click?u=862004159972503fe35fefc93&id=e05875f596&e=d7954f414c> Will you help us build an intergenerational economic engine for the North Olympic Peninsula by contributing to the PTC today?
