Over the last two days, House Republican leadership has worked overtime to deceive the American people. Here’s a quick breakdown of what happened – and what happens next.
Like Thieves in the Night
As Bob Woodward once said, “democracy dies in darkness,” and it couldn’t be more reflective of the deceptive tactics House Republicans used this week to jam through their Tax Scam Bill
that benefits billionaires, makes poor people poorer, and sick people sicker.
It all started at 1AM (yep, you read that right) on Wednesday morning, when House Republicans scheduled debate on the Tax Scam Bill in the House Rules Committee. If that sounds odd,
it’s because it is. Typical committee business happens during business hours, when the American people are awake. But having this debate in the light of day wasn’t going to be helpful
to House Republicans’ crusade to pass this bill – no matter what.
House Democrats fought back, filing over 500 amendments, extending debate long into the morning and throughout the day, by sharing testimony from our constituents and sounding the alarm
on how devastating this bill will be for EVERYONE. I testified, sharing stories from neighbors like you who depend on Medicaid and SNAP. We stood firm for 29 straight hours, united

Once debate wrapped in the Rules Committee, the Republican majority dropped a new version of their Tax Scam Bill and sent it to the floor for a vote just two hours later – only, this
bill is so polarizing, they had to hold the floor open for votes to make sure all of their caucus made it back to vote. Democrats used every procedural maneuver possible to prevent
this bill from moving forward. Ultimately, the Republican Tax Scam Bill passed the House by ONE vote…at 6:56AM Thursday morning. This is no way to govern – and it is deeply, deeply
frustrating.
Here’s How This Bill Could Impact Washington’s 6th
* Over 188,000 people who rely on Medicaid are at risk of losing benefits because of new Republican Red Tape and massive cuts to the program
* Roughly 465,853 students at risk of losing free school lunch
* Estimated 47% increase in premiums for the 25,000 people who rely on the ACA
* Roughly 115,000 people who rely on SNAP could lose benefits
* $255,670 annual tax cut for the richest 0.1% in our district
* Includes language that will effectively ban every insurance plan on every Affordable Care Act exchange from covering abortion
What Happens Next?
Now, it’s up to the Senate to decide the fate of this bill, where it will likely be re-worked and debated. Congressional Republicans set a July 4 deadline to pass this Tax Scam in the
Senate and send it to the President’s desk.
