I wanted to let you know that after listening to your comments at the BoCC Monday meeting (5/19), in response to John Holbert’s public comments about the status of the Pleasant Harbor MPR, I felt it was important to make a personal request to all of you. In the future I would ask you to please refrain from making public comments that suggest a “smear campaign” is afoot against the county on behalf of the Statesman Group, the project manager or the community. Given the long history of this project, the years of legal battles and now subsequent years of challenges with permitting issues and mistakes made by DCD, even after the lawsuits were settled, I personally feel it is being “tone deaf” to not understand why Statesman is upset with the county. Whether their position is right or wrong, in my view Statesman is the county’s customer. Where is our customer service? The county’s words and actions don’t seem to align with helping move this project forward to me. I also don’t think that it reflects well on the commissioners to publicly suggest nefarious intent on behalf of Statesman or the community. It’s not helpful, it’s not professional and is not the right message in my view to present to the general public or Statesman regarding this project, which all of you have publicly supported. Your public comments do make a difference and in this case statements like that don’t help the situation which I see as a growing divide between Statesman and county government. This has been my concern from the beginning of my engagement with the project. I’ve seen it get worse over months and months of back and forth between the involved parties. I’m taking blame out of this equation, as when negotiating parties are not able to trust each other and communicate things come to a standstill. My views on this do not mean that I believe Statesman doesn’t present challenges too and hasn’t made some mistakes as well. I also know how the rumor mill spins most everything in this county, especially south county. Here again comments such as this don’t help solve the problems and they feed the rumor mill. I am personally trying to help make the project a win/win for Brinnon and the county. I would like to see less problem creation and much more problem solving from all parties, but that can’t happen if trust and communication aren’t at the forefront. I worry that the project may not be able to be accomplished at this time. The comments I heard last Monday do not give me confidence about what the intent is for an outcome by our county. My confidence is wavering and my concerns for all parties has increased. How do we get to a place where this can move forward is the question I ask each of you to consider. I see your role as Commissioners as having the responsibility to move this project forward if you support it. I feel responsible to try and mediate for both parties, as I support both. If the county no longer supports the project, then please let Statesman and the community know. I wonder if Statesman doesn’t complete the resort, what will happen next? I would imagine you ponder the same question. I could tell you what the rumor mill is saying, and I know Brinnon residents are pondering the same question as well as listening to the rumors. I do believe the majority of Brinnon wants and is ready for this resort to be built. There will always be naysayers, but they aren't the majority. I wonder if the minority, who perhaps has the funds to create fear of legal retribution will keep the county from doing what is good for the county and its residents? Sometimes that is what appears to be happening looking out my personal window. I of course say that knowing I am not privy to all the issues engulfing the Pleasant Harbor MPR project and can understand the challenges and stress all of this may present. Still, this doesn’t make the comments made at the meeting “OK.” You know I’m happy to discuss my views on this personally with any of you and thank you in advance for consideration of my request and taking the time to read this email.
