HomeMy WebLinkAbout052825 email - Press Release_ PTHS Student New Assistant at Evergreen Fitness thanks to “School-to-Work”Gillian McCracken, 21, a student at Port Townsend High School, is the newest part-time gym assistant at Evergreen Fitness thanks to “School-to-Work,” a program designed to help students
with intellectual and developmental disabilities graduate into employment. Jefferson County manages the School-to-Work contracts with the state and the local provider.
“I love my new job! It’s fun working and seeing people at the gym!” McCracken said on her first day on the job earlier this month, as she wiped down an elliptical.
Her duties include front desk support, equipment maintenance, facility upkeep, stocking supplies, and office duties. Next month, she will “walk the stage” at school to receive her diploma
beside her peers.
Sam Touchie joined McCracken at Evergreen Fitness as her job coach. Touchie works at Cascade Community Connections, a Port Townsend-based provider that assists people like McCracken
find and keep employment in Jefferson County.
“I can’t stress enough how beneficial it is for employment support to begin when a student is still in school. It really is a team effort between families, schools, the county, the state,
and Cascade to make sure they are prepared and are supported in the next phase of their life. This program is truly lifechanging for students like Gillian.”
School-to-Work is a state-funded program that is brand new to Jefferson County. McCracken is the county’s first participant. In the coming months, Touchie will assist McCracken with
mastering work tasks so she may one day work independently.
While Touchie is paid by Cascade Community Connections, McCracken’s hourly wage is paid by Evergreen Fitness. Cascade Community Connections works one-on-one with employers to create
customized positions for their clients. Businesses that employ people with intellectual and developmental disabilities often see cost savings as well as improved staff morale and customer
service. Supported employment is accessible to all eligible adults, not just high school students.
