1. Youth Activities & Recreation (Most Repeated Theme)
● More places for youth to hang out: Students repeatedly expressed a need for
more spaces where they can socialize, such as a roller skating rink, bowling
alley, cozy indoor hangouts, and more social spots like “The Nest.”
● Outdoor & Environmental Activities: A significant number of students requested
outdoor clubs and programs focused on the environment, as well as
opportunities to engage with nature through activities like rock climbing and
hiking.
● Sports & Physical Recreation: Many comments mentioned a desire for more
sports options, including better facilities for soccer, basketball, wrestling, and
track, as well as the addition of turf fields, a rec center with more basketball
courts, and an aquatics center.
● Indoor Recreation: A notable number of comments mentioned a desire for
places to hang out indoors, such as arcades, a climbing gym, and spaces with
board games or places to play sports.
Key Takeaways for planners, policy makers, and youth program providers:
● Investing in recreation facilities, such as sports fields, youth clubs, and indoor
recreation centers, could significantly improve opportunities for youth
engagement.
● A focus on outdoor programs and nature-based activities would align with
students' interests in environmental education.
● Spaces where teens can socialize, like cafes or skating rinks, are in high
demand.
2. Youth Employment, Education, & Resources
● More Job Opportunities: Students emphasized the need for more local jobs,
especially for high schoolers, in various sectors including construction,
landscaping, and internships. They also requested pathways to careers beyond
traditional retail and coffee shops.
● School Resources: A few students requested more resources for schools, such
as Advanced Placement courses, better financial support, and more
sponsorships for activities.
● Driver’s Education & Career Readiness: Students expressed interest in having
Driver's Education included as part of their school curriculum. Additionally, there
were calls for more career resources, guidance on scholarships, and assistance
in finding teen jobs.
Key Takeaways for planners, policy makers, and youth program providers:
● Youth employment programs and partnerships with local businesses could
provide more career opportunities for high school students.
● Expanding school resources, especially for advanced courses and career
readiness, would address students' educational needs.
● Offering driver’s education or local scholarships could be beneficial in
supporting youth development.
3. Community & Infrastructure Improvements
● Transportation & Roads: Several comments highlighted the need for improved
transportation options for youth, such as free or subsidized transportation to
events, and more public transit options like buses or dial-a-ride services for
young people. Additionally, road improvements, such as better lighting,
sidewalks, and more visible crosswalks, were mentioned.
● Housing: There were mixed sentiments on housing—while some students asked
for more affordable housing and more housing options, others were concerned
about overdevelopment, particularly near the golf course. Affordable housing for
younger populations was a top concern.
Key Takeaways for planners, policy makers, and youth program providers:
● Improvements to public transportation would benefit the youth, especially for
accessing recreational and social events.
● Ensuring affordable housing options for young people and maintaining a balance
between development and the rural character of the community is crucial.
4. Retail & Dining Options
● More Shopping & Dining Options: A number of students expressed a desire for
more places to shop, particularly stores that cater to teens (e.g., clothing stores,
thrift shops). They also requested more dining options, including chain
restaurants like McDonald’s or Chipotle.
● Extended Hours for Businesses: Many students pointed out that businesses
close too early and want more places open after 5 pm, particularly for shopping
and food.
Key Takeaways for planners, policy makers, and youth program providers:
● Introducing more teen-friendly retail stores and food options could address the
demand for local conveniences.
● Encouraging businesses to stay open later could provide more opportunities for
teens to engage socially in the evenings.
5. Community Character & Preservation
● Preserving Rural Character: Students showed a deep appreciation for the
community's small-town, rural character, with an emphasis on preserving parks,
natural landscapes, and historical architecture. They want to keep the unique
vibe of the town, including its natural beauty and LGBTQ+ friendly atmosphere.
● Community Safety & Support: Students appreciate the safety and support they
feel in their community, particularly for sports programs. The close-knit
relationships in the town and its supportive atmosphere were mentioned
positively.
Key Takeaways for planners, policy makers, and youth program providers:
● Balancing development with preservation of the community's small-town charm
is a priority for youth. Policies that protect green spaces and the historical
character of the town could strengthen the town’s appeal.
● Youth programs that promote inclusivity and safety should be prioritized to
maintain the supportive atmosphere of the community.
6. Miscellaneous Concerns
● Climate Action & Social Issues: A few students expressed interest in getting
involved with social issues such as climate change, housing crises, and
community education.
● Health & Mental Wellness: Several comments highlighted the need for more
mental health programs and facilities supporting youth.
Key Takeaways for planners, policy makers, and youth program providers:
● Providing youth with avenues to engage in community issues, like climate action
or housing, could help foster a sense of responsibility and connection to their
town.
● Addressing mental health needs with more targeted programs for teens could
improve overall community well-being.
Conclusion:
Overall, these comments emphasize the need for more youth-focused spaces and
activities, especially for socializing, sports, and outdoor programs. Providing more job
opportunities, expanding local education options, and improving infrastructure
(transportation, roads) will further support young people’s growth and engagement.
Preservation of the rural and small-community character is also important to them,
while they seek more modern amenities like retail stores and dining options. Public
policymakers, school leaders, and youth program providers should prioritize
investments in recreation, transportation, and housing while maintaining the
community's unique identity.
