Stopping the US House-passed budget reconciliation bill in the Senate is a top priority of the Sierra Club. Even as we work to win the narrative, expose the so-called “big beautiful bill” for the nightmare it is, and mobilize the grassroots all across the country, Sierra Club’s campaigns and programs continue to rack up impressive wins and show how strong – and necessary – we are in this moment. Speaking of this moment, May is Endangered Species Month. We are living through our planet’s sixth mass extinction event – and the first one caused primarily by human activity. We started this month with two big wins in a very challenging landscape. Far-right Republicans outnumber Democrats by more than two-to-one in both chambers of Florida’s state legislature. For years, the legislature has delivered Governor Ron DeSantis virtually everything he has wanted with little friction. But his plans to sell out Florida’s beloved state parks to golf course and hotel developers and open up Apalachicola River Basin to oil drilling both came to a grinding halt thanks to incredibly successful efforts by Sierra Club Florida and its allies. Gov. DeSantis signed the State Parks Preservation Act into law <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=c9314c4ca0da0a7 f63f9c67c32c206e6e7ce78d39ea27d12fd0564d55ed9faa5c326dcfac637802bc4d0114fefc574179c370017428196f4> last week and is expected to sign the “Kill the Drill” bill as well, as both bills passed the legislature unanimously! <https://image.emails.sierraclub.org/lib/fe9b13727661047e75/m/1/525eaeca-e805-4bdd-b346-d30c3f222a80.jpg> Photo credit: Erin Paulsen Photography Our Florida team organized nature and state park lovers all across the state in a massive effort to protect the parks. They mobilized Apalachicola River Basin oyster farmers, fishermen, and the local chambers of commerce to be the face of the anti-drilling campaign -- in addition to helping to fund successful litigation <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=c9314c4ca0da0a7fe558c f2a678ef3a76785a558fdeb7966fc7c8607fa66d98575a4086bdb99c47781d719b6f3f67ca4c32877f7e9c869ea> that added much-needed momentum to the effort. Another Highlight: Holding Berkshire Hathaway Accountable for Its Dirty Coal Plants: The Beyond Coal Campaign and Chapter volunteers from Iowa, Nebraska, Utah, and Wyoming traveled to the Berkshire Hathaway Shareholder Meeting in Omaha on May 2-3. Berkshire Hathaway’s electric utilities collectively operate the dirtiest coal fleet in the country. Our presence was supported by digital advertising, a mobile billboard truck, free coffee with branded cups, and work with a local influencer. Thank you for your ongoing partnership.
