However, the influence of hearing loss on late-in-life risk for neurodegenerative disease is unknown. Dr. Lee Neilson's published study <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fjamanetwork.com%2Fjournals%2Fjamaneurology%2Ffullarticle%2F2824569/2/010001975fe6e2d3-3c7c7cc7- be2f-4ce1-86f4-cf0c8c30fa70-000000/qAIwdzYpo2aKB56rS54RctdZ6sKRyKexW403KJG3MrQ=409> looked to “evaluate whether hearing loss is associated with incident Parkinson Disease (PD)” utilizing the national database of US military veterans at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). In this cohort study of electronic health record data for more than 3 million US veterans with a mean 7.6 years of follow-up, hearing loss was associated with incident PD in a dose-dependent manner, even after adjusting for competing risk of death, age, head trauma (an important military-associated risk factor), frailty, and established prodromal disorders. Research also showed that those who have the worst hearing loss seemed to have the highest risk of developing PD. Interestingly, this risk was attenuated by hearing aid dispensation within 2 years of an abnormal hearing test. <https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/USVHAVISN20/2024/11/10457996/6023540/visn20mirecc_crop.png> ➤ NewsFlash <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.mirecc.va.gov%2Fvisn20%2FNewsflash%2Findex.asp/2/010001975fe6e2d3-3c7c7cc7-be2f-4ce1-86f4-cf0c8c30fa70-000000/5amjrI-jjsrN1BaiNQ_qdfjh Pt15qSYw5aKDL2xHkh0=409> ➤ Adaptive Sports <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.mirecc.va.gov%2Fvisn20%2FNewsflash%2FAdaptiveSports.asp/1/010001975fe6e2d3-3c7c7cc7-be2f-4ce1-86f4-cf0c8c30fa70-000000/lScvpqii_ VsNjd_kEN8C5BoZXZLSRAqBQH4Ri2vF-3U=409> ➤ Financial Readiness <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.mirecc.va.gov%2Fvisn20%2FNewsflash%2FFinancialReadiness.asp/1/010001975fe6e2d3-3c7c7cc7-be2f-4ce1-86f4-cf0c8c30fa70-000000/A RoumcZCqYBHaEfilmxFfjDWsQ1sTNyku6O4X4Omv44=409> ➤ Resources <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.mirecc.va.gov%2Fvisn20%2FNewsflash%2Fresources.asp/1/010001975fe6e2d3-3c7c7cc7-be2f-4ce1-86f4-cf0c8c30fa70-000000/6bAkxozlwZoSUOlbYSRo MlSeHLDpbgq1DVZVCWuKyFs=409> ➢ Brochures <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.mirecc.va.gov%2Fvisn20%2FNewsflash%2Fbrochures.asp/1/010001975fe6e2d3-3c7c7cc7-be2f-4ce1-86f4-cf0c8c30fa70-000000/nlvqKiv0MezS5qAjul qBCXFQ_JLAwFWv-w8-YskW_wU=409> ➢ Digital Media <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.mirecc.va.gov%2Fvisn20%2FNewsflash%2FDigitalMedia.asp/1/010001975fe6e2d3-3c7c7cc7-be2f-4ce1-86f4-cf0c8c30fa70-000000/WqLqkQvLjn4 noyc56oz9KuILCPbVWhbDkH4P0GTHrNw=409> ➤ Service Dogs <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.mirecc.va.gov%2Fvisn20%2FNewsflash%2FServiceDogs.asp/1/010001975fe6e2d3-3c7c7cc7-be2f-4ce1-86f4-cf0c8c30fa70-000000/HEXxJhh2vbhLm_B CeztVr9Ynee4kvw2VXl0Nzli7Rzs=409> ➤ Transition Assistance <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.mirecc.va.gov%2Fvisn20%2FNewsflash%2FTransitionAssistance.asp/1/010001975fe6e2d3-3c7c7cc7-be2f-4ce1-86f4-cf0c8c30fa70-0000 00/oN-8GYRHsf0vk2WIpBYaGjcKjmVg0RmZFe2_N3gd7Vs=409> ➤ Warrior Care <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.mirecc.va.gov%2Fvisn20%2FNewsflash%2FWarriorCare.asp/1/010001975fe6e2d3-3c7c7cc7-be2f-4ce1-86f4-cf0c8c30fa70-000000/pOqFiAY_1UfySxn zjCHvI7k6Wb2Fa3CowyOLoeCW9kc=409> FORWARD MARCH: All Veterans enrolled in VA’s health care system <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.rehab.va.gov%2Ffactsheet%2FAudiology-FactSheet.pdf/1/010001975fe6e2d3-3c7c7cc7-be2 f-4ce1-86f4-cf0c8c30fa70-000000/RW7KFGpajihp4gvnwmC45id1Y6PEYNmsAtqC5PzWXS0=409> are eligible for comprehensive audiology diagnostic evaluations <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fhear ing.health.mil%2FResources%2FHelp-and-Support%2FPost-Military-Service%2FVA-Auditory-Injury-Disability-Ratings/1/010001975fe6e2d3-3c7c7cc7-be2f-4ce1-86f4-cf0c8c30fa70-000000/0RzKivSUV3aY3k0GVRV-iMmlrA RQDDplkL8EBgU5zRU=409> . The study concluded that, "Hearing loss appears to be an independent risk factor for later development of PD. Hearing aids attenuate this risk, and therefore widespread screening for hearing loss and appropriate use of hearing aids may reduce the incidence of PD." Dr. Neilson's work also illustrates that additional studies are required for examination of mechanisms underlying associations of hearing loss and PD. About Lee Neilson, MD <https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/USVHAVISN20/2025/05/11624307/neilson_original.jpg> Lee Neilson is a staff neurologist at the Portland VA Medical Center and an assistant professor of neurology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).
