Born in the Philippines, Lino Rivera has performed as a solo recitalist, concerto soloist, chamber musician and accompanist on three continents. He makes it his mission to advocate and premiere contemporary works; to explore and meet the artistic, creative, and technical challenges of piano transcriptions; and to discover and perform obscure solo piano repertoire throughout the ages. He played the North American Ballads of Frederic Rzewski superbly in September’s concert from Composers Inc. These are big pieces, requiring endurance and virtuosity, and yet they have an immediacy that really gets to an audience, based as they are on recognizable tunes. They are also brilliantly colorful and fiendishly pianistic. Rivera made them come alive in a half-hour of remarkable music-making. The concert featured an abundance of new American music, played to the hilt and rewarded with a nonstop standing ovation. The evening also features the Washington state premiere of Lux Aeterna (2024) by California composer and pianist Richard Cionco. Brought to you by KPTZ, this concert will also be simulcast on 91.9 FM. The story flows with twists and turns, devastating yet hopeful and determined. It is full of rich sensory images and emotional and descriptive language. She’s in charge of making sure the new Hadlock sewer system becomes a reality. Samantha estimates that by mid to late June we will have an operational sewer system at least for a small section of the territory. Existing septic systems will be “de-commissioned” and raw sewage will flow through the brand new treatment plant. This has major economic implications for the entire county. Zoning changes will allow development of many more commercial buildings and residential properties. Samantha (aka ’Sam’) believes the entire project will be up and running sometime in 2027. Maryanne also interviews Tyler Zwirtz, the owner of Type Townsend Studio, a rather unique shop in downtown PT that specializes in old typewriters and various antiques. Tyler was one of those kids who started collecting typewriters when he was about 10 years old. By the time he was in his early 20’s, he had seven storage lockers full of them strung across the country. He was living in Seattle and exploring the Northwest, and when he visited Port Townsend, he fell in love it. Tyler moved here without a job in sight, and stumbled onto the shop. Turns out the previous owner was planning to shut it down. He bought Type Townsend Studio and added his collection to the inventory. He’s now celebrating the successful studio’s one-year anniversary! The Caves are one of the greatest repositories of Buddhist art…. June 24 & 27 Episode 76 Now we’re 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang, just outside the Mogao Caves and their repository of Buddhist art. It all began in the second century BC when the Chinese chased the Huns out of the Gansu Corridor and made Dunhuang the western most outpost of their empire. The city grew rich from the trade that passed through its gates….
