SUBJECT: Workshop: Establishing a Youth Commission for Jefferson County
STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
Strategic Objective 6B of the County's Strategic Plan is: "Increase the availability of youth-focused activities to
offer more opportunities for youth to be engaged in community life."
ANALYSIS:
A great way to achieve that objective would be for the Board of County Commissioners to create a
Youth Commission. During my time at Clark County, I had the pleasure of interacting with the
Clark County Youth Commission. The Youth Commission was comprised of high school students
who would choose an important community issue every year. They would develop a problem
statement, research the issue, examine potential solutions to the problem and at year end present the
issue and potential solutions to the Board of County Commissioners for consideration.
We found their work to be valuable in helping address important community issues. Members of the
Youth Commission felt the work was rewarding and that it helped them become engaged with the
community and involved in local governance.
Staff welcomes Board input on whether to pursue establishing a Youth Commission for Jefferson
County.
FISCAL IMPACT:
None at this point.
RECOMMENDATION:
Listen to a brief presentation, discuss the idea and provide guidance to staff.
