June 20, 2025 COUNTY NEWS Spokane County Approves New Measures to Combat June 20, 2025 <https://members.wsac.org/emailimages/1717107438240-WACountiesWeekly_Logo.png> COUNTY NEWS Spokane County Approves New Measures to Combat Opioid Crisis The first initiative is a Co-Responder Program in collaboration with the Spokane Fire Department to provide immediate support and intervention for individuals experiencing opioid-related emergencies. This initiative will pair behavioral health professionals from Frontier Behavioral Health with first responders to better serve the community. Mary Kuney, Chair of the Spokane County Board of Commissioners, emphasized the program's significance, stating it will enable "more effective, compassionate care to those in crisis." The program is funded by the Mental Health Sales Tax and is set to launch later this year. The program's creation in 2022 had been a somewhat unusual foray by the state into removing homeless encampments. Most of the time, cities do that work. Commissioners approved a letter last week to the Washington Forest Practices Board in Olympia that raised financial worries about the stricter regulations. Commissioners said the new regulations, if implemented, would lead to the loss of significant revenues to counties that rely on commercial timber cutting.
